Location –
Edinburgh Airport is located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It
is located 8 miles west of the city centre. Edinburgh Airport is located
just 12km from the centre of Edinburgh. If you are traveling from Edinburgh,
head along the A8 towards Glasgow. The airport is clearly signposted.

Airport is the sixth largest international airport in the UK. In
2002, passengers increased manifolds to 6,906,731. Edinburgh Airport
registered 8 Million passengers in 2005. Edinburgh Airport is owned by BAA
plc, the company that also owns important airports like Heathrow, Gatwick,
Stansted, and Glasgow airports. The present terminal building was constructed
in 1977. It has been renovated and upgraded to match the world-class standard
that is expected out of Edinburgh. The new control tower was accomplished
in 2005.

Terminals
– The main terminal has been operational since 1977. All the
30 or so airlines operate from this terminal. The terminal building
has two floors.
Transit systems – There is no dedicated transit system
in the airport.
Inside the terminals – Arrival-areas for both UK and
International flights are situated on the ground floor. The check-in
desks and the baggage reclaim centers are also situated on the ground
floor. All departure gates are situated on the first floor of the
terminal building. The check-in times for both International flights
and European flights is 2 hours prior to departure. For domestic flights,
the time is just an hour before departure. Boarding generally begins
around 30 - 45 minutes before departure.
Safety - Enhanced security measures are enforced
so certain items are a strictly banned from the airports. It is advised
that one should always check the exact hand luggage allowance with
particular airline before packing. Some items like scissors, blades,
knives, needles and even pool cues/darts are not allowed while traveling.
Syringes that are required for diabetics and other medical reasons
are only allowed in hand luggage if they can be proven as a medical
necessity. The security personnel have severe policies for cylinders,
magnets, fire-lighters, poisons and radioactive materials.
Business facilities – There are facilities like business
lounges inside the airport. The facilities offered are complimentary
beverages and light snacks. Travelers get a wide range of newspapers
and magazines. Television, phone and fax facilities are also readily
available. Another lounge offers wireless ultra high-speed internet
access throughout the airport. The wireless hotspots at the airport
have been covered by the service providers. British Airways first
and business class passengers can obviously use the BA executive lounge.

Family interests – Baby care facilities are situated
next to the toilets in the arrival hall and the departure lounge.
For adults (parents) there are unisex toilets both before and after
the security control. These are suitable for parents with young children.
The eat-outs at Edinburgh airport have prepared menus
to suit the tender taste-buds of the children. All the restaurants
in the airport welcome children. There are fast food and children's
meals counters inside the airport. While children have some fun, there
are a number of shops selling goods both for adults and children.

– Facilities for disabled travelers in Edinburgh airport
start with reserved sitting arrangements. Devices like induction loops
are available which can amplify airport announcements for passengers
with impaired hearing. There are easy to access wheelchairs and comfortable
arm rests on the chairs. The airport has a significant number of low
level information monitors to give comfort to the eyes with low vision.
There are directions that are clearly labeled in black on yellow background
to assist the visually impaired. In the concourse of the airport,
travelers will be able to find phones that are fitted with induction
couplers. These devices help in amplifying the volume of the phone

use of sign language. Both long and short-stay car parks have a number

Parking options – There are many options in and around
Edinburgh Airport. Short stay parking is ideal for
those wanting to stay for up to a few hours. The valet parking service
is suitable for business travelers and those who want to move around

regular courtesy transfer buses to the airport terminal.
Extra information - Recently there have been plans to expand
Edinburgh airport by adding a third runway. A proposed
tram route is expected to connect to Edinburgh Airport in 2009. An
extension to the terminal is also being planned. It will add six gates
on a new pier to the east of the current building.
Leaving from Edinburgh airport – Edinburgh
airport does not have its own train station. But the two
main stations in Edinburgh are fairly easy to access as they fall
on usual bus routes. There are several bus services between Edinburgh
airport and the city centre. One can easily find the bus stands in
front of the terminal building outside the UK arrivals lounge. Bus
services run from early morning up to late at night. There are taxi
ranks in many locations in and around the airport. Many car hire options
are also obtainable in the UK Arrivals Hall. One can arrange pre-book
car hire by phone or internet.

Essentials - Airport and Tourist Information desks
are located in the international arrivals hall on the ground floor. The
lost property reclaim services can be reached flanked by the check in and
international arrivals on the ground floor. Toilets are situated in the
UK arrivals hall and departure lounge. There are many cash dispensers available
throughout the airport which accepts major bank cards. They are concentrated
in the terminal building, both before and after security.
