Location –
Birmingham International Airport is a major airport located
on the border of the city of Birmingham. The airport is also close to the
borough of Solihull in the West Midlands. The airport can easily be accessed
through the M42 motorway and A45 main road. It can also be accessed by the
Birmingham International railway station on the Birmingham to London line.

airport is the fifth busiest airport in the UK and handles almost
8.5 million passengers every year. It currently offers many domestic flights
in addition to destinations across Europe, the Indian subcontinent, the
Middle East and North America. The airport was opened at Elmdon on 8 July
1939. Then it was owned and operated by Birmingham City Council. In 1987,
the ownership of the Airport was transferred to Birmingham International
Airport plc. In 1983 the airport was privatized and since then
the facilities and also tourist traffic have increased manifolds.

Terminals
– There are two terminals, the main terminal and the new second
terminal.
Transit systems – An air-rail link system at Birmingham
International Airport is operational. It is a people mover
which is a fully-automated and also grade-separated rail transit system.
Inside the terminals – The Main Terminal also known
as Terminal 1 was opened in 1984. There are around 40 airlines that
operate from Terminal 1. Arrivals area is on the ground floor in the
Millennium link Block. Travelers can check-in at desks located on
the ground floor in the main concourse. Departure Lounges are situated
on the first floor. The check-in times for both International flights
and European flights is 2 hours prior to departure. For domestic flights,
the time is just an hour before departure. Boarding generally begins
around 45 minutes before departure. Birmingham's second terminal called
the Eurohub was opened in 1991. it shared the distinction of being
the first terminal in the world that combined both domestic and international
passengers. It is linked to Terminal 1 by the Millennium Link walkway.
Arrivals on 2nd terminal are on the ground floor in the Millennium
link Block. The departure lounges are on the first floor.
Safety - Enhanced security measures are enforced
so certain items are a strictly banned from the airports. It is advised
that one should always check the exact hand luggage allowance with
particular airline before packing. Some items like scissors, blades,
knives, needles and even pool cues/darts are not allowed while traveling.
The security troops have strict policies for cylinders, magnets, fire-lighters,
poisons and radioactive materials. The lapses in security at the airport
are a thing of past with latest gadgets replacing human intervention.
Business facilities – There are executive lounges in
Terminal 1. The lounges are open daily from 05:30 - 19:00. The facilities
offered are complimentary beverages and light snacks. A wide range
of newspapers and magazines as well as facilities for television,
phone and fax are available. Business Booths are available in the
Departure lounge in Terminal 1. These individual private offices provide
the use of power points, telephone, fax and modems. Meeting rooms
are also available in Terminal 1 which can accommodate 2-40 people.

Family interests – In terminal 1, there are provisions
for nappy changing rooms. These are available at all times and situated
on the first floor. A few rooms can also be found in the Departure
Lounge. Terminal 2 also has its own share of changing rooms especially
meant for babies. Entertainment facilities are available in terminal
1 on the ground, first floor and in the departure lounges of terminals
1 and 2. These centers offer video games, amusements and rides to
keep the kids pleased. Adults can take the kids to view aircraft from
the picnic area at the end of the Long Stay Car Park. As far as shopping
and eating go, eateries in Terminal 1 offer a wide choice of food
and plenty of seats. There are many other takeaway and snack options
throughout both Terminals. Parents can buy coloring or activity books
from WH Smith, located in both terminals. |

Special service
– Birmingham International Airport tries to
make sure that disabled passengers are able to travel as happily and
hassle free as possible. There are many facilities for disabled travelers
including wheelchairs available on request. Toilet facilities for
the disabled are present at important locations throughout both terminals
as well as in the Multi-Storey car park. Many staffs are able to communicate
using sign language available at Information Desk Induction Loop System.
There are reserved spaces available in the Short-Stay car park close
to the terminal building.
Parking options – At Birmingham airport,
there are many parking options. There is Short Stay parking for stays
up to 2 hours. Multi Storey car parks are ideal for short trips up
to a week. The Long Stay car parks are perfect for stays over a week.
Extra information - While shopping at Birmingham
airport, always remember that there are products which are
classed as Duty Free items. These include liquor, tobacco and pure
perfume. When traveling from the EU to the UK, please do not pay any
tax or duty on goods you have bought in another EU country. This is
valid as long as the tax was included in the price when you purchased
the items (for your own use) and gifts.
Leaving from Birmingham airport – Birmingham
International railway station is directly connected to the airport
passenger Terminals by SkyRail. For trains to the rest of the UK,
there is a Birmingham International Interchange situated on the West
Coast Main Line. National Express operates several long distance coach
services linking a number of major cities with Birmingham Airport.
Local buses also stop outside the passenger terminals and provide
connections with the city centre and the adjacent districts. There
is an official taxi rank just outside the Airport Passenger Terminals.

Essentials - Cash Dispensers help travelers to
get hold of cash for all cards. These can be found in the centre of the
departure. They are located in the Terminal 1 (Ground Floor, First Floor
and Departure Lounge). In the Terminal 2, similar services are offered on
the ground floor. Several payphones are available in the departure lounge
of the airport. For tech-savvy travelers and businesspersons, there are
internet booths. Many toilets are also available n the terminals and the
airport.
